Pilgrim Academy Wears Red to Support Anti-Racism and Celebrate Black History Month

Pilgrim Primary Academy was a vibrant sea of red today as pupils and staff came together to mark Black History Month and support the national “Wear Red Day” campaign, organised by the anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card. The powerful visual message reinforced the Academy’s commitment to standing united against racism and promoting equality and respect for all.

As part of the day’s activities, children attended a special assembly where they learned about the inspiring story of Jack Leslie, a pioneering footballer from Plymouth who made history in 1921. Leslie, who played for Plymouth Argyle, was one of the first Black professional footballers in the UK and was selected to play for England—only to have the opportunity withdrawn due to the colour of his skin.

The story of Jack Leslie sparked thoughtful discussions among pupils about fairness, representation, and the importance of challenging discrimination. The assembly served not only as a tribute to Leslie’s legacy but also as a reminder of the progress still needed in the fight against racism.

Pilgrim Academy is proud to be part of a wider movement that educates and empowers young people to stand up for justice and equality. Today’s event was a meaningful step in fostering a culture of inclusion and respect within the school community.
